About

Circumference by S. Billie Mandle is a meditation on the light and atmosphere that imbues the corner of Emily Dickinson's bedroom where she wrote her poems. This book contemplates the spirit that lingers in a single place.

Delicate pink vellum encases the sewn softcover book, reminiscent in shape and size of a poetry chapbook. A poem by Emily Dickinson accompanies the imagery.

“Over the course of one year, I photographed Emily Dickinson’s bedroom, focusing on the corner near her desk, where she wrote all of her poetry. I looked at the light as it changed throughout the day and across the seasons. By photographing this potent corner, I am not trying to replicate what Dickinson might have seen, but rather looking at a space that invited deep concentration. This small corner led to expansive poetry.” -S. Billie Mandle
