The photographs by Walker Evans presented in this volume represent a broad survey of his work dating from 1929-1970, and it was the first book of this scope to appear on the photographer since the publication of Evan's classic American Photographs in 1938. The one hundred plates are accompanied by an introductory text by John Szarkowski, Director of the Department of Photography at MoMA at the time, and a bibliography.
