Friedlander, who graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, is well known for his black-and-white photos of urban streetscapes from the 1960s and 1970s. Originally published in 1970, Self Portrait is a retrospective of photos from this period taken with a Leica 35mm camera and black-and-white film.
