About Tokyo Compression Revisited

Tokyo Compression (Revisited) is probably Wolf's most famous series. It's a collection of images of Tokyo commuters during rush hour. Wolf stood in the platform and took portraits of the passengers, who travelled in packed trains, pressing themselves against the foggy glass. The Tokyo subway appears like a very stressful location where the passengers, in spite of being so close together, quite literally leaning on each other or agains the doors and walls, seem very isolated, sucked into their own thoughts. Wolf, who mainly focuses on megacities, is able to capture this overloaded environment that can also feel very isolating, thorough the expressions of the passengers. This work won many awards and was shown in exhibitions around the world, selling out in a matter of weeks.
